The New Yorker: Your Eustace, 2012

"Drawn by Rea Irvin in 1925 for the first issue of The New Yorker, Eustace Tilley has appeared—in some shape or form—on the cover of every Anniversary Issue since. In recent years, readers have submitted ingenious riffs on the iconic dandy for the covers contest. For the 87th anniversary, readers were invited to create a book-bag version of Eustace Tilley."

To see my three submissions to The New Yorker's contest and to read more about it, please visit my blog.

This guy is WHAT?!?

My very first blog post. I must tell the king!
I got into the 'telephone game' idea, where the message gets mangled along the way.
It may have been all Henny Penny's fault, but everything turned out OK in the end.

2012 Tomie dePaola Illustrator Award Submission

"So they went along and went along until they met Turkey Lurkey"
Three dimensional paper collage.
 22" x 15" x 3"

This is my submission to the 2012 Tomie dePaola Illustrator Award. This year, Tomie has chosen an excerpt from “Chicken Licken,” by P.C. Asbjörnsen, as the piece to be illustrated.

2012 Tomie dePaola Contest Entry

Let's see if this posting works! Here's my entry for the 2012 Tomie dePaola Award. I took his suggestions to be creative to heart and tweaked my way of thinking about the text to put a whole new spin on it.

Here's the bit of text we were supposed to illustrate:

So they went along and went along until they met Turkey Lurkey
“Good morning, Goosey Loosey, Ducky Daddles, Cocky Locky, Henny Penny,
and Chicken Licken,” said Turkey Lurkey, “where are you going?”
“Oh, Turkey Lurkey, the sky is falling and we are going to tell the King!”
“How do you know the sky is falling?” asked Turkey Lurkey.
“Ducky Daddles told me,” said Goosey Loosey.
“Cocky Locky told me,” said Ducky Daddles.
“Henny Penny told me,” said Cocky Locky.
“Chicken Licken told me,” said Henny Penny
“I saw it with my own eyes, I heard it with my own ears,
and a piece of it fell on my tail!” said Chicken Licken.
“Then I will go with you,” said Turkey Lurkey, “and we will tell the King!”
