2013 Tomie de Paola contest

Here is my entry for the Tomie de Paola contest for 2013. I chose a passage from The Yearling.
This illustration is done on scratchboard, with pen and ink and some digital paint. I really enjoyed working on this piece because I loved the passage in the book. Also it was great to get together with some of the people in this group for critique sessions!
 

Little Women

This is my entry for the 2013 Tomie de Paola contest. Though I hadn't yet read it, I thought that of the three book options, I could relate best to "Little Women." And I did enjoy the book, after I got over the conventions toward women of that period. Thank goodness for Jo, who was the rebel of the family!

After many versions, I did mine in pencil with digital alteration in Photoshop. It was fun to add pattern to the piece and (hopefully) not go overboard!

Overall, it was a learning experience working in just black and white. As an artist, I'm still working on balancing detail vs. overall composition and creating strong values that read from a distance.
As always, I enjoy seeing the variety of pieces that come out of the Tomie de Paola contest. There are so many wonderful illustrations that I can't imagine how he picks the winner!

I  had so much fun working for the 2013 Tomie de Paola Contest!

My illustration was inspired by an excerpt from the Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain (Chaprter VI). And, I decided to use my three-dimensional cut-paper technique. This piece measures 40" x 30" x 2" and it was done entirely with Canson MiTentes paper.

Tomie 2013

Here is my entry for the Tomie DePaola contest for 2013. I chose to work from The Yearling. I did my piece in linocut and watercolor on hot press watercolor paper.  It was fun to create and participate. As always, the Tomie awards are very random, he often chooses simple over complex and the styles he likes and the winners he chooses, he states they are "HIS" choices. Congratulations to the winner, Sandra Ure Griffin and the runners-up, Brent Beck, Anni Matsick, Bradley Cooper, Stephen Ingram, Sarah Dvojack, Alice Ratterree and Andrea K. Lawson!

Tomie does explain that black and white is very hard to master successfully. He stated that some actually used bits of color, a no-no, and others were very muddy in their execution. I agree and it is definitely something I would love to work more on perfecting!

RISD CE students enter Tomie dePaola contest

Well-know children's book illustrator Tomie dePaola has an annual children's illustration contest through SCBWI, with the winner chosen by Tomie himself. This year the prompt was to choose a passage, line or description from one of the following classics: "Little Women," "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer", or "The Yearling." The illustration had to be in black and white, including half-tones. For more information about the contest itself, go to the contest guidelines at SCBWI.  

A number of our students did fantastic illustrations and entered them into the contest. Although they were not among the winners, in my book they're winners for taking on an assignment and doing terrific new work! Those that I saw on the website were:
